Unity of the People's Pharmacy. Program is aimed at increasing access to medicines

Since the Ministry of Health began distributing free of charge in June, medicines for asthma, 83.388 million people across the country have removed the popular medicines in pharmacies, representing an increase of 60% of access, compared to the same period before of gratuity.

Of this total, more than half of people served living in extreme poverty counties. In the first 35 days of action, 47,400 people withdrew the drugs in 1084 municipalities in extreme poverty who rely on the Health Action Priceless, People's Pharmacy program.

According to reports the Ministry of Health, is expected to expand coverage of the program for the 2365 People's Pharmacy municipalities included in the plan by the end of the year.

Until June 4, the federal government bore 90% of the cost of medicines and consumers with 10%. Now, citizens can take for free, three asthma medications in ten presentations. The antiasthmatic ipratropium bromide, dirpoprionato beclomethasone and salbutamol sulphate are now part of Health Action Priceless, along with 11 medicines for hypertension and diabetes, offered for free, since February last year.

Salbutamol sulfate is offered free of charge in their own 555 units in two presentations. Already more than 20,000 in the private network, the program here has conveniadas People's Pharmacy, all three drugs are offered in eight performances.

To remove the drugs, simply present photo ID, Social Security and prescription drugs within the period of validity.

The inclusion of asthma medications in the program came after the gratuity of hypertension and diabetes (in 2011) after the ministry realize that the sale of drugs for this disease has shown the highest growth in retail drugstores, reaching 322% between February 2011 and April 2012.

Furthermore, asthma is among the chronic diseases that are considered important epidemiological point of view, with actions set out in the Strategic Action Plan To Combat of Chronic Noncommunicable Diseases (NCDs) in Brazil, from 2011 to 2022.
