The Health Department of the Federal District is seeking active trachoma - A chronic infectious eye disease caused by a bacterium, with consequences that may affect the cornea and conjunctiva leading to blindness. Last week, about 300 children and staff of the shelter house of Ishmael, in the North Wing, were examined and 19 cases were diagnosed. In 2012, we studied 1071 children and adults being diagnosed 65 cases of the disease.

Altogether were examined last year 2,794 people and found 331 cases of trachoma.

Trachoma patients with ocular irritation have generally mild. Other symptoms include runny eyes, swollen eyelids, swollen lymph nodes near the ear, similar to infectious and allergic conjunctivitis.

Global estimates of the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2009, reveal that there are around 41 million people worldwide with active trachoma, trichiasis with 8 million and 1.8 million blind due to trachoma.
