The World Health Organization (WHO) said no one knows the exact number of deaths from influenza A (H1N1). Official figures record approximately 18 500 victims of the fatal virus, but the agency says, many countries have not listed the virus as the cause of death.

The WHO said more research is needed before we know a precise number. A study published on Tuesday (27), in the journal "The Lancet", estimates that up to fifteen times more deaths may have occurred.

A spokesman for WHO, Fadela Chaib, said he still can not say whether that number is real.

Chaib said that most deaths from H1N1 have other root causes recorded. She added that experts worldwide, including experts from WHO, still researching the exact number of deaths.

According to the agency, many countries simply do not list the virus as cause of death on death certificates. Many certificates indicate "breathing difficulties".

The published research estimates that nearly 300,000 people have died by the virus in the first year of the disease.
