The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates up to 250,000 cases of cholera this year in Haiti. With contamination of water sources during the rainy season and hurricanes, which goes from June to November in the country, are expected, still, about 4000 new cases per week.

According to information from the UN agency, the financial resources to fund prevention and treatment of the disease are coming to an end. The consolidated financial appeal for the country is U.S. $ 230.5 million, or nearly $ 470 million. Of this amount, less than 20% were obtained, which puts the country in second place worldwide shortage of resources.

The United Nations Office of Humanitarian Assistance (OCHA) indicates that this amount should be directed to fund essential sectors such as health, water and sanitation.

The director of OCHA's operations, John Ging, said it was "unacceptable" that many advances achieved in the past year have been lost due to lack of resources. He added that "having helped so many Haitians after the earthquake, now we need to help them urgently to rebuild their lives."

OCHA cites reports of aid workers in the capital Port au Prince, saying the cholera epidemic has infected more than 27 000 people, killing about 200 Haitians this year alone.

The country's health minister, Guillaume Duperval Florence, said the most urgent priority is to improve the living conditions of hundreds of thousands of people who lack access to clean water or sanitation. According to the minister, this is an essential step in combating the epidemic.
