The Institute of Pharmaceutical Technology at Fiocruz (Farmanguinhos) Bolivia donated approximately 14,000 tablets of Artesunate Mefloquine (ASMQ), a medicine used to treat malaria. It is the foundation's second donation to the South American country. The amount is equivalent to 2,325 treatments delivered to the National Malaria Programme in Bolivia.

The action is part of a unit's strategy in partnership with DNDi - abbreviation for Drugs for Neglected Diseases Initiative - for product distribution, product design Fact (combination therapy based on artemisinin).

According to the coordinator of the project in Farmanguinhos, Erik Daemon, the drug is indicated by the Ministry of Health as first-line treatment against falciparum malaria. Have we entered with a request for prequalification ASMQ at the WHO and is ongoing with the registration process in Latin America, Africa and Southeast Asia, he said. The drug is already registered in Brazil and in 2009, the unit began the process of technology transfer from the Indian company Cipla, which registered the product in your country.

Further studies are being conducted in pregnant women and children in five African countries: Burkina Faso, Ghana, Kenya, Tanzania and Zambia. Besides these, ASMQ has been subjected to clinical trials in about six countries.
