Research shows that three or four cups of coffee a day restores function of dopamine in the brain

A study by researchers at the University of Coimbra, Portugal, demonstrated that administration of caffeine, in doses equivalent to three or four cups of coffee per day, control the disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children.

The results suggest that the active substance without causing side effects such as dependence, which occurs with the drug ritalin, medicine amphetamine derivative currently used to control the disease.

The study which has been developed over the past three years in rats, has shown that caffeine is beneficial for restoring the function of dopamine as a neurotransmitter in the brain.

The work also indicated that several changes occur in the brain in cases of attention deficit and hyperactivity.

According to lead researcher, Rodrigo Cunha, it is safe to say that coffee consumption is beneficial in children and adolescents, but the clinical practice should conform to an entire protocol.

"The results of clinical trials still need more complete and therefore you should not even recommend the hyperactive children responsible for the inclusion of coffee in your diet," says Cunha.

According to the authors, the findings, to be published in the journal European Neuropsychopharmacology, are promising for the development of a new generation of more selective drugs, or who work only in the treatment of attention deficit and hyperactivity without causing effects or secondary side, as toxicity and dependence.
