This year the national immunization campaign against influenza includes for the first time, the population living in prisons. The Health Minister, Alexandre Padilha, launched today (5) in Rio de Janeiro to the National Vaccination Campaign against influenza, with the goal of immunizing 24 million people. In people aged 60 years or more, are included in the priority group to receive immunization pregnant women, children six to 23 months, the indigenous population and health professionals.

This is a group with high prevalence and higher risk of having various respiratory diseases. By protecting this group, we are also protecting society as a whole, as a block chain of transmission of influenza to those who visit this group for family members of officials of the prison, who might have contact with a worker or a visitor.

Speaking at the launch, Minister inoculated a pregnant woman and an elderly man. Then, the municipal secretary of Health and Civil Defense, Hans Dohmann, vaccinated Padilha, the Otto Family Clinic Alves de Carvalho, Rio das Pedras, in the west.

Throughout Brazil, about 65,000 vaccination posts operate until 17h in today's healthcare facilities, schools, malls, clubs, churches and schools. The campaign runs until May 25.

In 2011 reduced by 66% the number of deaths caused by H1N1 and reduced hospitalization in 44% of severe cases. And our effort is to continue this way, the minister said. He said that although the goal is to reach 80% of the target recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO), the ministry provided more than 30 million vaccines to achieve the best possible coverage.
