The UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), said the drop in the amount of international aid to low-income countries is increasing the number of people living with HIV. The statement was made by the executive director of UNODC, Yuri Fedotov, during a meeting last week in Geneva. He said the situation of prisoners with HIV is also dramatic.

To Fedotov, "it is a devastating picture, especially in countries where the HIV epidemic is concentrated in groups like drug users."

The agency's chief said that "treatments that could save lives are diminished by lack of money." The UNODC has a key role in assisting governments in the fight to reduce the demand for drugs.

The agency also works for HIV prevention, treatment and care of patients. The UNODC Executive Director said that more than ever, are needed integrated services and focus to drug users and prisoners. Yuri Fedotov expressed concern with the overall increase in the abuse of synthetic drugs such as amphetamine stimulants and drugs with revenues.

Last month, the Commission on Narcotic Drugs of Onu held a meeting in which he requested protection for the most vulnerable sectors of society.
