According to World Health Organisation (WHO), about 40% of the population has some type of sleep disorder or syndrome. In Brazil, 43% of Brazilians can not sleep properly, remaining weary and increases the risk of developing other diseases.

There are 90 types of sleep disorders, but many are unaware of the diagnosis. Among the principal are obstructive sleep apnea, found in about 30% of the adult population and insomnia, which affects between 10% and 15% of the population of São Paulo, explains Peter Genta, a pulmonologist at the Center for Sleep Medicine HCor .

To alert the public about sleep disorders and to clarify doubts of the population, HCor held on March 16, World Day of Sleep, an action in the National Assembly (Avenida Paulista). At the time the population can perform free test to find out how is the quality of sleep and an assessment for risk for sleep apnea. We will make an individualized assessment and the person has come out with the result at the time, says Peter Genta.

People who suffer from obstructive sleep apnea, which is characterized by repeated obstruction of the upper airway (throat) should be aware of other health problems, including hypertension, diabetes, and heart disease. Therefore patients with cardiac history should worry more about the quality of sleep.

Several studies have pointed to the negative consequences of sleep disorders. In obstructive sleep apnea, for example, is connected to a worse quality of life and increased long term mortality. On the world of sleep, we want to alert and educate the public about the importance of healthy sleep and the symptoms of sleep disorders and their consequences, concludes Dr. Genta.
