It was believed that this risk was too high for those who run long distances. However, we found that most people who have suffered a heart attack in the tests had preexisting heart problems and undiagnosed.

Running the 42.2 kilometers of a marathon does not increase the risk of cardiac arrest. At least, no more than other sports, according to Aaron Baggish of Massachusetts General Hospital, USA. Baggish's team analyzed all cases of cardiac arrest reported among the 11 million people participating in marathons and half marathons in the United States between 2000 and 2010. The study was published recently in the publication New England Journal of Medicine.

It was believed that the risk of cardiac arrest during the tests was very high. But this was not observed. The study showed that the risk is at most equal to those who do triathlon or running sporadically. A total of 59 cardiac arrests were recorded (42 fatal) in marathons and half marathons. Most people whose heart stopped beating in the tests had preexisting heart problems and undiagnosed.
