The study interviewed 811 people from at least 60 years

Researchers of the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul and Universidade Estadual de Campinas performed a study that evaluates the use of drugs among elderly residents of urban and rural areas of the city of Carlos Barbosa (RS). The results, published in the Journal of Public Health, Fiocruz, indicate disparities in drug use between the two populations.

The study, for which 811 persons were interviewed at least 60 years, reveals a higher prevalence of medication and polypharmacy among the elderly in urban (79.4%) compared to residents of rural areas (63.5%) of the municipality. The unavailability of health services near their place of residence, reduced access to these services available elsewhere, financial constraints and social isolation of rural residents can contribute to less access to drug use, the researchers explain.

According to them, issues related to rural work also influence the use of drugs. Rural workers who stay all day in the fields may give up using drugs more often than the urban use is hampered by its own conditions of rural labor, as in the case of drugs that need to be administered several times a day or who need special techniques and apparatus for the administration, clarify.

The continuous use of medication was reported by 72.3% of the aged. The prevalence of drug consumption was higher in women older than 70 years, white, single, more educated, higher income, to $ 260, affected by more diseases and poorer quality of life. Drugs acting on the cardiovascular system were the most commonly used by two people, since it represents a major cause of morbidity and mortality among the elderly, are often prescribed.

Note the high use of antidepressants, particularly among the elderly in urban areas, which account for 16.9% of the consumption of such drug. The results regarding the prevalence of polypharmacy, which was 13.9% among rural and urban elderly were similar to those achieved in the analysis of drug use for all traits analyzed.

According to scholars, the results can contribute effectively to the advancement in knowledge regarding the use of health services between rural and urban populations, since, due to logistical difficulties, there are few studies that include samples in the rural area. The role of lifestyle, beliefs and values of elderly residents in different areas in the demand for health services and drug use needs to be investigated, as well as factors related to health care and conditions of access to services and drugs, stress.
