The analysis will be voluntary with 10 000 women living in the province affected by the nuclear disaster at Fukushima

Fukushima's government announced on Thursday (12) it plans to test the breast milk of 10 000 women living in the province, home to rugged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, to analyze the levels of radioactive contamination.

The analysis, which will be voluntary, will cost approximately 50,000 yen ($ 660) per person and will be funded by the administration of Fukushima through a government fund to monitor the health of the population after the nuclear accident at the plant in March 2011.

The decision to perform the tests was made after many mothers in the province expressed their concern over the possibility of breast milk has been contaminated by radiation particles emitted by the Fukushima Daiichi plant, informed the local agency "Kyodo."

Since the beginning of the nuclear crisis in Japan, a priority for Government is to assess the extent of contamination in the food after detecting high levels of radiation in meat, rice and tea in the provinces adjacent to the center.

According to the Government of Fukushima, about 18 000 babies are born each year in the province and are nursed by mothers 10 000, which will be sent a questionnaire in the next few days to monitor their health.

Analyses conducted by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare of Japan in 21 women between May and June Fukushima detected traces of radioactive cesium in breast milk of seven of them, added the "Kyodo".
