Due to recent rains in the state of Rio de Janeiro, the State Health Secretariat of Rio released a technical note with guidance on leptospirosis directed to municipalities and health professionals. The document warns of the increased risk of diabetes in the next 30 days, since the bacteria leptospirosis is easily transmitted by contact with contaminated water and mud.

The department directs the municipalities, especially those of the highlands and the northern Rio de Janeiro, to structure the epidemiological surveillance and assistance to ensure the diagnosis and treatment properly.

The document emphasizes that the negative outcome of any specific serologic test for leptospirosis, with blood samples collected before the seventh day of onset of symptoms does not rule out the suspected case. Therefore, we need new blood collection after the seventh day of infection to aid in diagnostic interpretation.

Among the guidelines to avoid contamination is to discard food and medicine that came into contact with flood waters and also the disinfection of water in the household and the workplace that suffered flooding.

The main symptoms of the disease are fever, headache and body aches (myalgia), with the presence of epidemiological history in the 30 days preceding the date of onset of symptoms.

According to the Department of Health, approximately 15% of patients with leptospirosis occurs progression to severe clinical manifestations, which typically begins after the first week of illness may occur earlier. In such cases, the first 24 hours of admission, the disease can even lead to death.
