Study presented at the 14th edition of the Paulista Thoracic Society (SPPT) held in November, shows that the chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is underdiagnosed in Brazil. The study led by Flavio Ferlin Arbex assessed the numbers of the incidence of COPD in people referred to the EPM for preoperative evaluation between 2008 and 2011.

We analyzed 127 patients, of whom 106 had chronic respiratory symptoms. However, only 15% had a prior diagnosis of COPD, the physician notes.

We analyzed age, gender, presence of respiratory symptoms (cough, expectoration, dyspnea, etc.), and a smoking habit, previous diagnosis of COPD, and evaluated results of pulmonary function tests and others.

After retrospective analysis of patients referred for outpatient preoperative EPM, we observed that many doctors had not thought of COPD, even in cases of suspected pulmonary nodule or mass, revealed the resident physician.

Also according to Flavio, the lack of attention to the disease occurs for two reasons. First, because the smoker does not usually seek medical attention, believing that his shortness of breath and coughing are normal for their age and cigarette consumption. The second reason is the lack of importance given to spirometry - a basic screening test.

At the end of the study, our assessment has tripled the diagnosis of COPD, present in 44.2% of patients, not only in the 15% previously diagnosed, he said.

Spirometry should be indicated as a routine test for the entire smoking population. COPD is a serious disease is underdiagnosed and its major obstacle to good treatment outcome.
