The Ministry of Health of São Paulo is doing duty, on Wednesday (28), Republic of the Metro station to invite users to voluntarily participate in a survey that will test two preventive vaccines against HIV. The study, developed in partnership with the Faculty of Medicine, USP, 20 needs more volunteers. So far, only five people were recruited.

The move also aims to sensitize and inform the public about the importance of early anti-HIV testing, as well as where they can be performed free of charge in public health. The survey is conducted by the Research Unit of the HIV Vaccine CRT for the international network of vaccine research "HIV Vaccine Trials Network" (HVTN) based in the U.S. and composed of leading research institutions in 27 cities on four continents.

The study has been conducted since January 2011 by the Center for Reference and Training in STD / AIDS Unit of the Secretariat in the capital, and seeks to determine how best to display portions of the HIV virus to the body. Options to be tested compare two products that have copies of HIV in differing amounts.

"It is important to note that parts of the virus used in the experiments with synthetic and volunteers are inactive. Therefore, there is no chance of contamination," said Artur Kalichman, deputy coordinator of the CRT DST / AIDS and responsible for Research Unit Vaccines.

Those interested in participating in the study should answer the questionnaires on practical exposure to HIV and also undergo medical evaluation, which includes collecting samples of blood and urine. During the study, the recruits will have available a team of specialists from CRT to medical and psychological support.

Men or women, regardless of sexual orientation, can participate. Among the criteria are: having between 18 and 50 years old, be healthy and not infected with HIV reside in metropolitan Sao Paulo and in the case of men being circumcised. Pregnant or lactating women can not participate.
