Team of scientists from McMaster University in Canada, reported that specific mixtures of antimicrobial agents in mixtures of lipids (fats) can significantly increase the effectiveness of these agents to kill the resistant bacteria.

Study may contribute to overcoming the lethal effects of bacteria resistant to drugs is becoming an increasing clinical problem, particularly in hospitals.

To make their discovery, Richard Epand and colleagues conducted experiments with groups of mice infected with lethal doses of multidrug-resistant Escherichia coli (E. coli).

They then treated the mice with combinations of conventional drugs or combinations of drugs encapsulated in lipid mixtures.

They found that certain mixtures of lipids caused the drug to act together synergistically. Thus, they were much more effective in increasing the survival rate of rats exceeded because the cellular mechanisms used by these bacteria to defeat therapeutic agents.

Results also demonstrated a new use of a family of antimicrobial agents called oligo-acyl-lysyls, which have the potential to be combined with other drugs and mixtures of lipids with similar properties to produce a platform for other specific applications.

"As we saw in the recent outbreak of E. Coli in Germany, bacteria can mutate to become super bacteria that resist antibiotics," said researcher Gerald Weissmann. "Thanks to this antibiotic therapy based on lipids, multi-resistant bacteria may start to lose its strength."
