Master thesis, Universidade Federal Fluminense (UFF) demonstrates that both the public services, such as nurses, do not meet the health needs of the user of alcohol and other drugs from the perspective of comprehensive care. Among the main issues raised are the lack of training for the care and time is not available because of the accumulation of activities in the daily routine of nursing staff and the resilience or non-acceptance by the user to treatment and the difficulty of access to care.

Research Nurses' performance on attention to the user of alcohol and other drugs in extra hospital services, led by professor Claudia Mara de Melo Tavares, School of Nursing, Pharmacy, and his master's advisees, Sonia Mota Gonçalves Silva Paiva, was conducted between July 2005 to January 2006, with 30 nurses from five counties in South Central Fluminense: Areal, Comendador Levy Gasparian, Paraiba do Sul, Sapucaia and Three Rivers.

In the selected region, which has 153,610 inhabitants, the programs of the National Policy for the User of Alcohol and Other Drugs have not yet been deployed. However, the nurses, even without performing capacity to deal with this specific population, take care to customers, confirming its historical leadership in educational practices and health promotion.

Challenges

It states that the teacher Mara Claudia, coordinator of Research Education, Creativity and Care in Health Care, the experience with attention to users of alcohol and drugs places nurses in the face numerous challenges: working from a perspective different from that learned in academic, highly prescriptive and focused on disease; face his own anxiety, insecurity, prejudice and even inability to deal with drug and alcohol user; program activities based on ministerial policies that are not yet consolidated in the region and not valued by local managers, creating treatment protocols that allow the monitoring and evaluation of nursing actions developed by the user of alcohol and drugs in the region, and teamwork and networking, to ensure comprehensive care.

Given the importance that the problem of alcohol and other drugs takes to public health, it is considered that the preparation of nursing professionals to work with these clients should occur throughout the health network. The training should focus on an interdisciplinary and transversal approach of the problems experienced in each workplace, because when there is a significant learning, the nurse acts in a more creative and engaging.
