Scientists from Monash University in Australia developed a new wound dressing that sense the presence of infection by changing color.

Approach may lead to treatments faster and more effective for chronic wounds such as leg ulcers and bedsores.

How it works

The dressing works by changing color according to temperature. Temperature changes can indicate inflammation or suggest problems with the blood supply, which can lead to infection. The dressing can help patients and physicians to detect infections early, allowing them to treat the complications before they become serious.

"If problems are not quickly identified and treated, the wounds may persist for months or years, resulting in a significant reduction in quality of life, noted study leader Louise van der Werff.

Until now, researchers have successfully developed a tissue sensitive to temperature, with the next step and turn it into a full bandage that will be available commercially.

"The fabric we created is sensitive to changes of less than half a degree Celsius. Patients and doctors will be able to match the color of the fibers with a calibration chart that indicates the health of the wound, said van der Werff.

Currently, doctors use electronic equipment to determine the temperature across the wound and surrounding tissue. We hope that the dressing can provide significant cost savings.
