Physical abuse in childhood is associated with significantly higher rates of functional somatic syndromes such as chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia and multiple chemical sensitivity among women, according to new findings from researchers at the University of Toronto.

"Women who reported being physically abused as children are twice as likely to chronic fatigue syndrome and multiple chemical sensitivity, and 65% higher chance of fibromyalgia," said principal investigator, Professor Esme Fuller-Thomson. "These findings persisted even after controlling for factors that could confuse us, as other adverse childhood experiences, age, race, mental health and adult socioeconomic status."

The study analyzed statistics obtained on a sub regional's 2005 Canadian Community Health Survey conducted with 7,342 women, 10% of them reported having suffered physical abuse in childhood. A minority of women reported having been diagnosed by a health professional with chronic fatigue syndrome (1.3%), fibromyalgia (2.5%), or multiple chemical sensitivity (2.7%).

Co-author Joanne Sulman, Department of Social Work at Toronto's Mount Sinai Hospital, says the research not only indicates an association between physical abuse in childhood and these disorders, but also explores the contribution of other psychosocial factors such as other childhood adversities, adult health behaviors and mental health.

"But perhaps the most interesting aspects of the research are the questions it raises, such as the mechanisms linking physical abuse to chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia and multiple chemical sensitivity, Sulman said.
