U.S. scientists from the Jackson Laboratory have discovered that a drug for humans is able to prolong the survival rate of rats.

Rapamycin, a drug used against rejection of organ transplants, is extracted from a natural bacterium of Easter Island. His action would help slow the aging of cells acting directly on an enzyme that speeds up chemical reactions in the body.

The survey, first of its kind in mammals, was applied to the rodents aged from 600 days old - equivalent to 60 years of age in humans - feeding them with the medication.

The results were very satisfactory in both sexes, increasing the life expectancy of up to 28% in males and females 38%.

The article, published in the latest edition of the journal Nature, was shown as a tool to be used in new lines of research to combat diseases of aging characteristics. according to the study's author, David Harrison, the drug in humans is not intended as a means of prolonging survival, as their strong side effects weaken the body's natural defenses, opening the door to possible infections.
