The UK is the only country in Western Europe to present increasing rates of tuberculosis (TB), and cases in London have increased more than 50% since 1999. It is estimated that each year more than nine thousand cases are diagnosed in the country. The problem becomes particularly acute in London, where 40% of TB cases are diagnosed.

In a study published by The Lancet, Professor Alimuddin Zumla (UCL Infection and Immunity) to alert the recommendations of a recent review of TB in the UK to be implemented urgently to prevent this problem gets out of hand.

The number of deaths from tuberculosis in the United Kingdom began to fall in London in the early 20th century with the improvement of living standards (better housing, nutrition and economic status). TB control was achieved by subsequent introduction in the 1960s, of anti-TB drugs, better health services and BCG vaccination.

Alarmingly, TB returned to London, with an increase in the number of cases of almost 50% since 1999, of 2,309 registered cases in 1999 rose to 3,450 in 2009, accounting for nearly 40% of tuberculosis cases in the UK.

For Professor Zumla, "poor housing, overcrowding and inadequate ventilation, were the conditions that prevailed in Victorian England, a century ago, and were among the causes of higher incidence rates in certain districts of London. In all European countries TB is concentrated mainly in high-risk groups such as migrants, refugees, homeless, drug addicts, prisoners, and HIV-infected groups. "
