A dietary supplement of synthetic derivative of vitamin B1 has the potential to prevent heart disease caused by diabetes, according to new research from Bristol University, UK. Vitamin B1 may help the body eliminate toxins and thus protect the heart cells.

Diabetes makes the heart more vulnerable to stress, less oxygen and nutrients are delivered to the heart and other organs. Heart damage can be caused by the entry of high glucose levels in cardiovascular cells, which increase the production of toxins that accelerate aging of the cell.

About 50% of people with diabetes die of cardiovascular disease, and this complication is the leading cause of death among people with the disease. Researchers warn that the increasing prevalence of diabetes (about one in every twenty people in the UK are diagnosed with the disease) will result in a new epidemic of heart failure unless new treatments are developed.

A team of researchers from Bristol gave a synthetic derivative of vitamin B1 called benfotiamine in rats with and without diabetes. They found that treatment of rats with diabetes type I or type II with benfotiamine from the early stages of the disease can delay progression of heart failure.

They also found that Vitamin B1 improves survival after heart attacks and healing in mice with type I diabetes (and even in mice without the disease). Foods rich in Vitamin B1 include Marmite, yeast and Quorn, but not yet known whether changes in diet alone provide enough vitamin exhibit the same effects as those obtained in mice supplements.

Previous research has shown that people with diabetes have type I and II levels of vitamin B1 about 75% lower than people without the disease. This result is attributed to the speed with which the vitamin is eliminated from the organisms in these patients and will not diets.

"Supplementation with benfotiamine in the early stages of diabetes increased the survival and cure the hearts of diabetic rats that had heart attacks and helped to prevent cardiovascular disease in mice with type I and type II. We conclude that benfotiamine would be a new treatment for people with diabetes, the next step of the research will test whether similar effects are seen in humans, "said Paolo Madeddu, Professor at Bristol.
