A new research unit, based at Cambridge University, UK, will help in formulating government policies on behavior and health, investigating the best ways to help people change bad health habits.

The Research on Behavior and Health will contribute to the national public health efforts to help the population to achieve sustained changes in behavior that lead to better health outcomes between different social groups.

Poor diet, lack of physical activity, smoking and alcohol consumption are responsible for some of the high incidence of chronic diseases worldwide. They also contribute to the differences in life expectancy between the poorest and richest in the UK and elsewhere. But while most people you value your health, many persist in unhealthy behavior.

The new unit will contribute to help meet the challenge of public health, initially focusing on diet, physical activity, smoking and alcohol consumption, particularly in environments where we live and work - to see what can be changed in the habits of people .

To Professor Theresa Marteau, director of the Research Unit, "achieving a sustained change in behavior that leads to better health outcomes and reducing inequalities is a key challenge to public health."

"The new unit brings together a group of excellent researchers to find the most effective methods of behavioral change of people to improve the health of our population."

Professor Patrick Sissons said: "The new unit will create synergies with existing research in population health sciences at Cambridge and the region, and promote collaboration among the worldwide research programs in neuroscience, epidemiology and behavioral sciences."
