More than 30 people, representing about 20 countries participated last week in London, a technical consultation organized by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) on national responses that cover the stigma related to AIDS.

The meeting aimed to share best practices that can be included in an international battle against the stigma suffered by people with HIV, and the creation of an array to track the development of activities against prejudice and discrimination.

The president of the Brazilian Association of Gays, Lesbians, Bisexuals and Transsexuals (ABGLT), Toni Reis, attended the meeting. He was invited to have contributed in preparing the matrix for Strengthening National Response to HIV for gay men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender people in the Association for Comprehensive Health and Citizenship in Latin America and the Caribbean (ASICAL).

According to Toni, a debated issue was the importance of mainstreaming in addressing stigma, ie include all sectors of government and civil society against this issue. We need to turn government policy into national policies and strengthening civil society and people who suffer from stigma, he said.

Toni said that the presentation of the plan to fight the epidemic of AIDS and STDs among gay men, MSM and transvestites, and plan to promote citizenship and human rights of this population in Brazil were widely praised and seen as a reference for the world. I feel we are on track, but we need to blame the organizations involved and accountable for the implementation of these two plans, he said.

Participants also discussed fundamentalism, which has been a major barrier to ensuring human rights of people who suffer prejudice and discrimination, monitoring and evaluation of public policies, and decentralization from the national to the states and municipalities.

The discussions and documents shared in the meeting held on 22 and 23 this month, will be used to develop practical guidelines for national programs against STDs / AIDS. The final report of this consultation will be ready in December.

Attending the meeting people linked to the United Nations, World Bank, Global Fund, activists and people who suffered any type of discrimination.
