A study conducted by researchers from Harvard School of Public Health found that certain bacteria that inhabit the intestine provide the environmental stimulus that initiates and perpetuates the chronic intestinal inflammation in genetically susceptible to inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

Inflammatory bowel disease results from a loss of homeostasis, or balance between the immune system and microbes that inhabit the intestine.

"In this study, we identified two microbes that incite inflammation of the bowel and that lead to inflammatory bowel disease in mice," said the study's principal investigator, Wendy Garrett. "We show, using both the metagenomic as the conventional culture techniques, the genetic heritage of an individual affects the bacteria that live inside your gut. Several studies are underway examining the intestinal microbial communities of patients with IBD, and we look forward to explore the role of Enterobacteriaceae, we have identified in patients with IBD. "

The IBD is a chronic inflammatory disease that affects 1.4 million people in the United States and its incidence is increasing worldwide. The disease is devastating and debilitating of the three biggest risk factors for colorectal cancer development.

"If IBD is caused by individual species of bacteria or disruption of the entire microbial community remains controversial," said senior author Laurie Glimcher. "Our results suggest that the responses go through two options - specific species of bacteria (Klebsiella pneumoniae and Proteus mirabilis) seem to work together with the natural microbial communities of the intestine to cause IBD.
