Procedure performs removal of bone marrow to study

A study conducted by a researcher at Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University, USA, revealed a "unique partnership" between two types of stem cells from bone marrow which could lead to advances in regenerative medicine. The goal of regenerative medicine is to allow the body to repair, replace, restore or regenerate cells, tissues or organs damaged or diseased.

Hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) in bone marrow perform the vital task of producing all blood cells in the human body. Now the new study showed that HSCs in bone marrow joins with other types of stem cells known as mesenchymal stem cells that give rise to bone, cartilage, fat and other tissues. Research has shown that this pairing as a "unique partnership" of stem cells that could lead to advances in regenerative medicine.

The identity of the cells in the vicinity of HSCs had been a matter of dispute. The study's leader, Paul Frenette along with his team found that HSCs and mesenchymal stem cells not only physically associate with each other, but also showed that both types of stem cells interact in crucial ways. Mesenchymal cells, for example, are deemed necessary to maintain HSCs in living bone marrow.

"We believe that these mesenchymal stem cells are a very important component of the niche of stem cells from bone marrow," said Frenette. "These cells probably play an important role in maintenance, movement and regeneration of stem cells from bone marrow. Additional studies may allow us to maintain healthy stem cells and develop new methods to expand them for clinical use. "
