Researchers from the Institute of Psychiatry at USP (Universidade de São Paulo) are testing magnetic stimulation of the brain, in order to contain the urge for people addicted to cocaine powder and reorganize the brain's functioning. This technique, called transcranial magnetic stimulation, has been used in Brazil since 2006 for the treatment of depression. According to doctors, the procedure is not invasive and almost no side effects.

This is the first time that Brazilian scientists decided to research if the benefits of the technique can be extended to chronic drug dependent. Previously, a team of Israel examined the effects of stimulation against cracking caused by smoking, with results that showed a drop in desire to smoke during the first three months.

According to the latest survey by Senad (National Office of Drug Policy), about 2.9% of the population and 7.7% of the students have used cocaine at least once in their lifetime.

For the psychiatrist responsible for testing at USP, Phillip Leite Ribeiro, the action of cocaine disrupts the brain circuits, alternating the operation of networks of neurons. The result is a dependent of cocaine, with difficulty of reasoning and decision, he said.

He also explained that transcranial magnetic stimulation is applied in the office, without anesthesia. The patient wears a swim cap and the doctor brings the device in the brain region to be treated. The waves penetrate about 2 cm.

In the case of cocaine, the exact location of the implementation was not disclosed, because it is something still under consideration. The sessions run for 20 days and last for 15 minutes at an average price of $ 400.00 each. After a month, the patient receives treatment to prevent relapses. Meanwhile, preliminary results show that there is indeed a decrease in craving.

And, contrary to what seems, magnetic stimulation does not cause shock. It's really different from electroconvulsive therapy method in which the brain receives an electrical discharge general, entering into convulsions. Transcranial stimulation generates a magnetic field with a small electrical current. The action is local, completed Phillip Brooks.

American Research

U.S. scientists discovered a genetic mechanism that helps explain the addiction to cocaine and opens a potential path to new therapies, according to a study published.

The investigation shows how the drug works in a process called epigenetic, in which the expression of a gene is altered in brain circuits for pleasure, which are the first to be hit by continuous consumption of any addictive substance.

The researchers from NIDA (National Institute on Drug Abuse) was administered to a group of mice repeated doses of cocaine, while maintaining the other group receiving injections of a saline solution. At the end of the study, the animals of the second group received a single dose of cocaine.

With this, they were able to show, first, that it is possible to block the change in gene expression caused by regular doses of cocaine, thereby preventing addiction to the drug, says Nora Volkow, director of NIDA. This fundamental discovery advances our understanding of the mechanism of cocaine addiction, he says. For her, the study offers a new potential target for the development of a treatment to combat addiction.
