Heart transplantation in Ceará has second highest mark in history

State advances in the area where ranks second in Brazil after the Federal District and in front of Paraná and São Paulo

In 2012, the state of Ceará recorded its second largest brand in heart transplants, with 28 surgeries. The record was recorded in 2008, when 31 surgeries were performed. This year records that exceed the 25 of 2009, 16 of 2010 and 25 of 2011. Since 2003, Ceará ensures its position as one of three states that more transplants performed in the country. That means new perspective on recovery to 293 heart patients attended in the state.

In Ceará, heart transplants are performed by Messejana Hospital Dr. Carlos Alberto Gomes Studart, hospital of the State Department of Health. The HM is a tertiary unit specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of heart and lung disease, offering all the high-complexity procedures in these areas and it excels in heart and lung transplants.

In 2008 and 2009, Ceará ranked first in number of transplants per million population, with 3.8 and 3.0 transplants. Until September this year, the state registered per million population, 3.6 heart transplants and ranks second in Brazil after the Federal District, with 6.7 transplants, and ahead of Paraná (2.3) and São Paulo (2.0), according to the Brazilian Transplant Registry (RBT).

Featured nationally ranked transplants, Ceará contributed this year to raise awareness across the country for organ donation, with the participation of teenage Nívia Castro Alves in the campaign of the Ministry of Health with 12 years old and 8 years living with a transplanted heart, Nívia is on the cover of the brochure to encourage donors. The green tie in his chest is used to symbolize international support for the cause.
