The Holy Spirit 242 registered organ and tissue transplants from January to June 2012, an increase of 16% over the same period last year, when 208 transplants were recorded.

Organs like the kidney, with the largest number of people waiting for the procedure had a 46% increase in the number of deceased donor transplants and 17% living donor. Already registered corneas small reduction in the number of transplants last year. This is because the donations were greater than the amount of people needing transplants.

We have a demand for a maximum of 20 corneal transplants per month in the Holy Spirit as we receive an average of 25 donations. Therefore, in the first half 37 corneas sent to other states, explains the coordinator of the Central Funding of the State Department of Health (Sesa), Rosemary Erlacher.

The reports of death by brain death, enabling capture of multiple organs, grew 22% in the first half of the year. According to Rosemary, to increase the number of donations, a work of restructuring and strengthening of the Commissions Intra-Hospital Donation (CIHDOTTs) has been done in the state, with visits to hospitals and training courses.

This year, two courses with the coordinators of CIHDOTTs were conducted and a third, dedicated to critical care physicians who work in Intensive Care Units (ICUs), will be promoted on Saturday (14). The aim is to increase the number of identification and notification of potential donors.

In addition to the qualification of the hospitals, the coordinator highlights the importance of expressing the desire to donate organs while alive, talking with family members, since they are authorizing the donation of organs and tissues. It is important to talk with family about wanting to be a donor, thus facilitating the donation process, he added.
