Ethics goes beyond

Exactly two years ago, the Federal Council of Medicine put into effect the sixth Code of Medical Ethics (CEM) of Brazil. After 20 years of operation, the previous edition has undergone complete update. The issues before new adds missing as the prediction of palliative care and strengthening the autonomy of the patient.

Were also revised medical standards for the advertising, conflict of interest, the second opinion, medical liability, the use of placebo and the interaction of professionals with financing plans, discount cards or consortia.

It was a lengthy, tedious, but effective. Doctors across the country contributed about 3,000 suggestions. There was involvement of medical directors, specialty societies and unions, and representatives of medical organizations. It was even a document that guarantees autonomy and clarification of the patient, and conform to the requirements of medical practice modern Brazilian.

One of the important points already appears in the preamble of the CEM. Determines that the doctor (goes for everyone) must accept the choices of their patients, provided that if the appropriate and scientifically recognized. It is from this rule that allow me to talk about medical ethics, is the theory or practice.

We know that the right patient gets longer by the choice of doctor. Must be something sacred, preferably based on research on training, competence, ethics, opinion of other patients and so on. However, unfortunately, we hear on a daily basis in hospitals and universities, absurd cases of disrespect. Some say that there are doctors (including major) peeking out from other patients and, often making it difficult for admissions, release testing, etc ... Even if this complaint is not actually confirmed, it is food for thought. Never anyone can use the patient's health as an instrument of action to achieve their goals.

More practical are the complaints that involve the health plan operators. According to the latest research DataFolha / Paulista Medical Association (December 2010), nine out of ten physicians who meet the insurance plans and suffer interference in the practice. Pressures to reduce examinations, admissions to anticipate, avoid more costly procedures, among many others.

This is also a regrettable practice. Denotes total lack of respect for patients and physicians. Threatens the health, even to the lives of the citizens who pay expensive fees in the health insurance, thinking that thus avoid the chaos of the public system. In this case, in particular, there claims palpable and documented. The Council, objectively, clears them and monitor medical management of the same operators that act this way.
