Research in five countries investigated viral concentrations related to climate

Study gathers Brazil, USA, UK, Spain, Hungary, Sweden, Belgium and Greece in search

Researchers from Brazil, USA, UK, Spain, Hungary, Sweden, Belgium and Greece will investigate possible changes in viral concentrations due to climate change and / or practices in water management in five countries vulnerable. The goal is to build models that provide hydrological effects in the flow of viruses that cause enteric diseases. The project team called Viroclime met last week in March for presentation and discussion of results, discussions and debate on the progress of the project workflows.

Organized by the Laboratory of Comparative and Environmental Virology of the Instituto Oswaldo Cruz (IOC / Fiocruz), the meeting was held in Brazil in Rio de Janeiro and the Institute Leonidas and Maria Deane (ILMD / Fiocruz Amazonia) in Manaus, where they were visiting participants to collection points and certification activities in the laboratory. The group meetings were held in Hungary, Sweden and Belgium.

Started in January 2010, the project proposes a new approach to the management of health problems related to water, the final product will be the production of the report Surveillance Case Study of Five Countries Environmentally Sensitive. In Brazil, the study involved collection of water from the Rio Negro in Manaus, at points located in the neighborhoods of Ponta Negra, São Raimundo Oliveira Machado Pupils and Cologne, and received support from Fiocruz unit in Manaus, a partner in the work done since 2004.

According to the deputy project coordinator, Peter Wyn-Jones, research is being conducted in places where there are significant environmental changes that could impact virus transmission in this case, the waterborne. The Amazon was chosen for its microbial diversity and epidemiological problems it faces. He stressed the importance of designing for environmental impacts in 15 or 20 years, since it allows to manage the injuries in this case related to viruses transmitted by water. Among the attendees were auditors found that occur as the sample collection and laboratory analysis in order to obtain a standardization of the methodology used to construct a database that will generate the projection models.
